Each one caps out at six players, so the ball of death I was always happy to be part of usually breaks down in these areas as everyone splits up again to find more fights or dungeons.

Once raids start, players can fan out and proceed either alone or with others as they vie to take down hellish monsters and acquire treasures, heals, and powerups in order to clear the raid. Destroy enough monsters, reach the biome’s boss, and slay it to move onto the next.

While not a full-fledged MMO, it borrows elements from large-scale raids, where success depends on cooperation and positioning rather than individual mastery of the game.

The game begins with a 33-player map, Inferno, which is an arid wasteland of roaming demons, 12 Torture Chambers and one big ascension battle to complete. The minions running around Inferno are easy enough to dispatch for practice and Em excesso bones (the game’s currency), or you can run right by them without punishment. Torture Chambers are miniboss rooms designed for six players to tackle at once, but you can enter them with fewer than six, even alone. However, you’re unlikely to get far solo. The minibosses are hulking skeletons and big, flopping demon worms with plenty of health, and they always have hordes of minions as backup.

This is a large-scale cooperative dungeon diver roguelike, all streamlined for accessibility so that you can enjoy the best parts of a typical raid experience without much of the setup.

I had good luck defeating Torture Chambers with just three or four fighters Perfeito, but six was always welcome, hence my eventual shepherding. I also ended up prioritizing keys when shopping at the Bone Shrines scattered around Inferno because, dang it, I love unlocking chests.

That Dark Woods safe haven I mentioned is where weapons are chosen, perks are wished for, and upgrades are purchased using loot from previous runs. At the early access launch, the title has four weapons to choose from: sword, bow, daggers, and staff, each offering a different play styles, movesets, and powers. After trying out the sword’s heavy slashes and blocks, the staff’s AOE blasts, and the dagger’s unrelenting aggressiveness, the bow was what I clicked with.

I thought my experience with ARPGs would be enough to push back against this enemy horde alone – I was wrong. It’s once I found other Rebel 33 Immortals Gameplay Souls (fellow players) to tag along with when my journey through Hell became a bit more manageable.

Nearby, Charon manages cosmetics, all currently unlockable for free using cosmetic tokens found in runs. To the north, Beatrice grants you Feats, which unlock new gameplay features, while the eight Weapon Altars around her will let you pick which one you want to defy divine judgement with.

Or like with Daggers of Greed, you generate ‘Greed’ off enemy hits; the amount of ‘Greed’ you build up determines the amount of damage you’re able to inflict with a takedown attack.

I played the preview solo because I was feeling particularly antisocial that day, but of course that doesn’t mean I was alone. Other players occupy the hub world and the main maps in 33 Immortals

There are also the co-op abilities attached to every class, which is one of my favorite feature implementation in the game. Holding down this button makes your character slam down a massive rune on the ground, making specific areas where more players must stand and activate them together. This can be extremely perilous when so many enemies are on screen.
